Gay Pride - What, Where and What to Wear

Gay Pride Month, also known as LGBT Pride Month or simply Pride Month, is a month-long observance dedicated to celebrating and commemorating the pride, culture, and history of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. The month-long event typically takes place in June and is celebrated by the LGBT community and their allies across the globe. In 1969, gay and lesbian communities protested police brutality and discrimination in New York City, resulting in the Stonewall riots.

Today, Pride Month serves as both a celebration of the progress that has been made towards achieving LGBT rights and a reminder of the work that still needs to be done. The month-long event typically features a variety of parades, parties, and cultural events that highlight the rich and diverse history and culture of the LGBT community. It is also a time for reflection and activism, as individuals and organizations use the month-long observance as an opportunity to raise awareness of the challenges still faced by the LGBT community and to advocate for further progress towards equality and acceptance for all people.

How To Celebrate Pride Meaningfully?

According to a Global Citizen article, there are five ways to celebrate Pride with a purpose and uplift the LGBTQ+ community around the world.

  1. Show support for LGBTQ+ people and organizations by attending events, making donations, and volunteering.

  2. Educate yourself and others on LGBTQ+ issues, histories, and cultures.

  3. Advocate for LGBTQ+ rights by contacting elected officials, signing petitions, and joining campaigns.

  4. Use your platform and voice to promote LGBTQ+ visibility and acceptance.

  5. Prioritize intersectionality and stand in solidarity with marginalized LGBTQ+ communities, including those who face additional forms of discrimination based on race, gender, class, ability, and other factors.

By engaging in these actions, you can celebrate Pride meaningfully and contribute to the ongoing fight for equality and justice for all members of the LGBTQ+ community.

What to Wear for Pride Party and Parade?

In general, one can wear anything bright, colourful, and bold to show support and solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community during Pride. Some other ideas include wearing rainbow-striped clothing, incorporating glitter or sequins, wearing a bold accessory like a rainbow scarf or fanny pack, or even DIYing a Pride-themed t-shirt or dress. Ultimately, the most important thing is to wear something that makes you feel confident, comfortable, and proud to celebrate love and diversity.

No matter what you choose to wear, the most important thing is to have fun and be proud of who you are!
